SHELBYVILLE — Ground has been broken for a new Bedford County E-911 communications center on Industrial Parkway. The project replaces a smaller dispatch facility that has been in use for years.
Public reports describe a purpose-built center for dispatch, administration, and support space. The current facility is expected to remain available as a backup site. County financing and district contributions both helped fund the building.
Emergency communications districts in Tennessee are largely fee-supported through telephone subscribers. They do not levy property taxes the way a county general fund does. Counties still often help with dispatcher salaries and related costs, and a project this size usually involves both the district and county government.
When the new center opens, the test is simple: Can dispatchers hear callers, locate them quickly, and keep radio traffic moving when several agencies are on the same call?
