SHELBYVILLE — Bedford County Fire Department protects a large rural county with a hybrid staffing model: career firefighters at Station 1 headquarters, and volunteers at stations across eight districts.
Department materials list nine stations, dozens of apparatus, and well over a hundred firefighters when career and volunteer ranks are counted together. Station 1 runs around the clock. Stations 2 through 9 rely on volunteers. Some municipal volunteer departments also work automatic mutual aid with the county system.
Beyond fire suppression, the department handles light and heavy rescue, emergency medical first response, public education, and coordinated HAZMAT support.
The model works when volunteer recruitment holds. When it slips, the outlying districts feel it first. That is why fire staffing keeps coming up in budget talks, even when the overall tax rate stays flat.
